Interventional radiology is a medical specialisation that involves performing a range of imaging procedures to obtain images of the inside of the body. The interventional radiologist carefully interprets these images to diagnose injury and disease, and to perform a range of interventional medical procedures. It is also referred as an image guided medical procedure to treat and diagnose diseases using minimal invasive process and treat target specific repair. It is an advanced technology where we can replace open surgical procedures and blood pump surgeries. This process is popularly called as bloodless medicine. This technique has bought remarked change in the definitive treatment of benign tumors. Beside this the two renowned techniques being angioplasty and angiogram. Recent studies show positive results in increasing the response to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the delivery of selected anti mitotic agents and antibodies to the targeted area of repair

The essential skills of an interventional radiologist are in diagnostic image interpretation and the manipulation of needles and the use of fine catheter tubes and wires to navigate around the body under imaging control.  Interventional radiologists are doctors who are trained in radiology and interventional therapy.  No other specialty possesses this unique combination of skills!

There is hardly any area of hospital medicine where IR has not had some impact on patient management.  Although the interventional radiologist has many techniques at his/her disposal these fall into 5 broad categories:

The range of conditions which can be treated by IR is enormous and continually expanding.  You may have heard of some of the following:  It is important to recognise that the interventional treatment is usually one of several treatment options available ranging from nothing, through drug treatment and up to surgery.  Each case should be considered on its own merits.

Well recognised advantages of these minimally invasive techniques include reduced risks, shorter hospital stays, lower costs, greater comfort, quicker convalesence and return to work.  The effectiveness of treatment is often be better than with traditional treatments.  It should be noted that humans are not the only species to benefit from IR. Veterinary surgeons are also turning to interventional techniques so you may find both you and your animals offered similar treatments!

As a result of faster recovery, shorter hospital stay and less post-surgery complications, the demand for minimally invasive procedures are rising worldwide. This procedure also involves image-guided treatment and diagnostics for curing cancer where interventional radiology is used to view inside the body and operate cancer, perform angioplasty and stent placement, balloon angioplasty, veterbroplasty-kyphoplasty and other such complex surgeries. This being a major success, the market for interventional radiology is likely to receive a boost in the coming years.
